Learn in Harrow

Family Literacy, Language and Numeracy Programmes

Family Literacy, Language and Numeracy (FLLN) programmes provide basic skills learning opportunities for parents/carers. Programmes in this category have 3 main aims:

  • To improve the literacy, language and numeracy skills of parents/carers
  • To improve the ability of parents/carers to help their children
  • To help children acquire literacy, language and numeracy skills

The intergenerational aspect is important and the key principle is that adults and children learn together. Some programmes have adults and children sessions and others are for adult only. In both cases it is the support for parents/carers with their own education and the improvement of their understanding of what children learn in school which enable them to engage in positive family learning in the home. It has been proved that children make good progress when their parents/carers show an active interest in their education.

There are a range of programmes being delivered in Harrow schools. Schools are from all phases of statutory education and may take a variety of approaches which comply with the Learning and Skills descriptors. All programmes are delivered by teachers from the school and college tutors working in partnership. Adults often progress to other courses when they have completed a FLLN programme and may acquire recognised qualifications which will ultimately help them back into the work place.
